AVG Internet Security is one of the most popular security products in the industry today. It is best known for its free antivirus solution that provides exceptional virus protection. The 2012 version has included some new features to keep your PC secure from viruses, worms and Trojans.

The downside we found with the new version is that it doesn’t include Parental Controls. This feature is necessary to protect your family from online threats, and we feel AVG could have done more here to protect its users.

Antispyware Protection

AVG is matchless in its ability to remove spyware, malware and other similar threats. It has Alternative Data Stream Scanner, an advanced feature that is absent from other internet security software suites; its job is to fish out hidden malicious software (malware) from your computer that other security products cannot find.

Antivirus Protection

AVG Antivirus has been certified by ICSA, W.C.L. and VB100% as a flawless antivirus product. Its commitment to fighting viruses has been recognised by these organisations, and it’s uncommon for an antivirus program to receive all three certifications.

Firewall Security

The firewall feature in AVG is good but could do with some improvement. It requires that you approve or deny every program that you connect to the internet with. Eliminating this can help improve user experience and avoid annoyance from regular interruption. Beyond this, AVG internet security has a rock-solid firewall which prevents harmful and unwanted intruders.

Other Features

As mentioned earlier, AVG lacks parental controls which are necessary to protect kids and the vulnerable online. However, it does offer protection for secure applications like online banking and shopping. And with these controls in place, you can surf the net and purchase goods and services with peace of mind. It also includes protection for social networking and chatting without risk of virus infection.

Ease of Use

AVG has a simple and straightforward interface. The navigation tabs are easy to use, and finding your way around the features and help files will not be an issue. The only problem we witnessed was at installation where it asks some configuration questions. The questions can be a bit confusing and if you aren’t an experienced user it could be irritating.

Support

If you have an AVG account, you’ll find the help menu very good because it allows access to online help. It also includes free email support, an FAQ section and knowledgebase on the company website. However they do charge for telephone support.

Summary

AVG Internet Security 2012 is an impressive program and despite some missing features, it will ensure your PC is secure as you surf the web.
